En effet, à deux reprises, la jeune héroïne contemple le même tableau, représentant un paysage aquatique peuplé des créatures surnaturelles d’un très grand artiste suédois : Le Neck et les filles d’Ægir (Näcken och Ägirs döttrar, 1850) de Nils Blommér. Cet article propose d’étudier une représentation visuelle de la mer du Nord et d’explorer sa contribution à un récit identitaire. L’eau permet à l’héroïne de comprendre la situation féminine et sa propre place dans la société au xixe siècle. Nous verrons que le neck symbolise la peur, difficile à représenter, de l’érotisme accompagnant le mariage. Là où, enfant, l’héroïne ne voyait que le motif féerique, elle lit, la seconde fois, toutes les désillusions féminines de l’âge adulte. Indeed, twice, the young heroine contemplates the same painting by a very celebrated Swedish artist, representing an aquatic landscape populated by supernatural creatures: The Neck and the Daughters of Ægir (Näcken och Ägirs döttrar, 1850) by Nils Blommér. This article sets out to study a visual representation of the North Sea and to explore its contribution to an identity narrative. Water allows the heroine to understand the female situation and her own place in society in the 19th century. I argue that the neck symbolizes the fear, not easy to represent, of the eroticism accompanying marriage.
