Certaines d’entre elles connaissent une réception et une médiatisation en France en partie grâce à la presse musicale spécialisée. À partir d’un corpus d’interviews publiées dans le magazine Metallian et d’entretiens réalisés avec des journalises, l’objectif de cet article est de montrer comment la mythologie nordique est mobilisée dans les interviews de la presse magazine musicale. Après avoir évoqué l’importance relative de la culture nordique dans la pratique du métier de journaliste, nous montrons comment ces références apparaissent durant l’interaction journaliste-musicien puis comment celles-ci sont mobilisées dans l’élaboration de la publication. Centrales dans les productions artistiques, les références culturelles mythologiques permettent aux artistes de véhiculer un discours anti-religieux, de valoriser un patrimoine culturel, d’évoquer de manière métaphorique le monde contemporain mais aussi de soutenir un discours promotionnel. Sous la plume des journalistes, celles-ci sont secondaires et l’évocation des dieux sert à construire la représentation médiatique des artistes. Viking Metal subgenre brings together bands inspired by Viking and Scandinavian mythology. They convey fantasized visions of the Nordic world through their lyrics and artworks. Some of these bands receive media coverage in France, in specialised magazines such as Metallian. Based on a corpus of published interviews and interviews with journalists conducted by the author, this paper aims to show how Scandinavian mythology is discussed in music press interviews. First, it finds that metal critics tend to have little actual knowledge of Scandinavian medieval history and Nordic culture. It then analyses how references to Scandinavian mythology appear during interactions between journalists and musicians. Artists draw on these references, central in their productions, to convey an anti-religion discourse, celebrate a cultural heritage, address our world in metaphorical ways, or support a promotional discourse. Eventually, it examines the purposes of such references when made by writers in their published pieces.
