She was, however, also a successful salon hostess and journalist, as well as the author of twenty-five plays published or performed between 1886 and 1916. Often highly innovative, these plays respond to the works of Ibsen and other European playwrights and intellectuals, but they use comedy and laughter to appeal to different factions in their audiences. Several of her plays, moreover, belong to the genre Stanley Cavell called in a study of Hollywood films of the thirties and forties “the comedy of remarriage.” Emma Gad’s theatrical works belong in the canon of modern or modernist drama. Au Danemark, Emma Gad (1849-1921) est aujourd’hui reconnue comme l’autrice de ce classique de l’étiquette qu’est Takt og Tone ([Tact et bon goût] (1918). Elle fut également une salonnière et une journaliste à succès. Elle a écrit vingt-cinq pièces publiées ou jouées entre 1886 et 1916. Souvent très novatrices, ces pièces répondent aux œuvres d’Ibsen et à celles d’autres dramaturges et intellectuels européens. Elles utilisent cependant la comédie et le rire pour séduire différents publics.
