En premier lieu, il s’agira d’explorer les présupposés de la catégorie ‘magie’ en partant de l’héritage frazérien, qui l’associe étroitement à la religion et à la science. Après avoir passé en revue des tentatives de s’en distancier, l’article proposera une reconceptualisation de la magie en termes d’agency de sorte à instrumentaliser ce concept pour résoudre le paradoxe d’Odin, qui dans la Ynglinga saga, pratique le seiðr sans pour autant en encourir le blâme usuel. The present article investigates the conceptualization of Old Norse seiðr, a word most often understood as a form of magic. First, it will look at the underpinnings of the category ‘magic’ by considering the weighty legacy of James George Frazer who so closely linked magic to religion and science.
