      <link>https://www.ouvroir.fr/lpa/index.php?id=1384</link>
The Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben, in his work What Is the Contemporary?, formulates particularly compelling propositions concerning the condition of contemporaneity. According to Agamben, this condition does not correspond to an inherent and necessary relation between a being and its time; rather, it implies a particular way of examining, inhabiting, and relating to the present time. The contemporaneity of a subject, he proposes, entails the capacity to sustain a difference, a non-coincidence with the claims of the present time. Conversely, adaptation to these claims, the perfect coincidence with them would constitute the mark of a subject’s actuality, indeed, of a subject that is all too current. Building on these propositions, this article proposes a reflection on how, in the field of education, we respond to the newcomers who arrive in the world and come to share with us “our times.” In an era marked by an education that is all too current, might we instead think of a contemporary education? Contemporary educational practice—long evident in schools through the massive presence of standardized materials, categories, parameters, scales, and assessments—presents itself as capable of operating in full alignment with the demands of the time, mapping and providing what students supposedly “need,” while eliminating the distance or dissociation between subjects and the present moment. A contemporary education, we propose, would instead be one capable of sustaining difference, of keeping open space for the renewal of the world, and of maintaining a void from which something that we can neither foresee nor predict may emerge – so that something of the subject might come into being. </description>
