<title>À la recherche du peuple russe.
      <link>https://www.ouvroir.fr/rhs/index.php?id=207</link>
While the institutionalization of the history of the nation-state during the 19th century is now well-researched, the same cannot be said of the flourishing of people’s history. We claim, however, that the latter constitutes a distinct discursive device. One way to assess its development is to trace the circulation and transposition of models from one national context to another. The paper analyzes three receptions of the discursive device developed by Augustin Thierry during the French Restoration. This device is used to write a counter-history of Russia – emphasizing, contrary to the official history of the nation-state, the role of the people. The interplay of similarities and contrasts among these three receptions highlights the inherent ambiguities of the notion of “the people”, as well as of the persona of the people’s historian. The study successively examines the history of the people as ethnic group (within the slavophile movement), as potential (in the historical writings of Alexander Herzen), and as class (in the historical writings of Georgi Plekhanov). </description>
