Cet article brosse un large panorama des différentes propositions théoriques et empiriques qui ont donné corps aux façons d’envisager la production de connaissances qui fasse droit aux dynamiques sociales. Longtemps inscrite dans le giron du marxisme, l’histoire sociale des sciences a intégré les déterminations économiques à l’analyse des processus d’élaboration des savoirs. Par la suite, les approches sociohistoriques inspirées des travaux de Robert Merton ont tenté de saisir les logiques de coalescence des collectifs savants. L’approche sociale n’a pas été absente des Social Studies of Science (STS), apparues dans les années 1970 : le social se trouvait alors replié dans les gestes élémentaires et cours d’action des activités de recherche. L’entrée par les institutions, dont Christophe Charle a été l’ardent promoteur en France, a réinscrit les enjeux collectifs dans l’analyse tout en saisissant les logiques globales de champs. Plus récemment, l’accent mis sur les dominations (de genre ou postcoloniales) ont étendu le questionnaire des enquêtes en histoire sociale et mis au jour des acteurs et actrices longtemps ignoré∙es. It is possible to reconstruct the formation and development of the social history of science over almost a century. This article provides a broad overview of the various theoretical and empirical proposals that have given substance to the ways in which the production of knowledge can be envisaged in terms of social dynamics. For a long time part of Marxism, the social history of science integrated economic determinations into the analysis of the processes by which knowledge was developed. Subsequently, socio-historical approaches inspired by the work of Robert Merton attempted to grasp the logic of the coalescence of scholarly collectives. The social approach was not absent from the Social Studies of Science (STS), which emerged in the 1970s: the social was then folded into the elementary gestures and courses of action of research activities. The institutional approach, ardently promoted in France by Christophe Charle, brought collective issues back into the analysis, while at the same time grasping the overall logic of fields.
