Ces manœuvres furent à l’origine d’un déséquilibre hydrographique qui ravagea plus d’un siècle durant la vallée de l’Espierre par des rejets fortement contaminés par les activités industrielles. Nous proposons ici de traiter de l’espace transfrontalier dans lequel s’est développé le complexe industriel. Nous montrons en quoi cette particularité a été à la fois un outil pour les Belges pour permettre la visibilité du problème sanitaire mais aussi de quelle manière cela a pu être utilisé par les industriels pour esquiver les contraintes qui auraient pu leur être imposées par les pouvoirs publics. The textile industrial development of Roubaix and Tourcoing throughout the 19th century was possible thanks to the efforts of the industrialists to bring large amount of water to the agglomerations. These maneuvers were at the origin of a hydrographic imbalance that devastated the Espierre valley for more than a century by flooding areas with waters heavily contaminated by industrial activities. We propose here to deal with the transboundary space in which the industrial complex was developed.
